Causes and Effect of TMJ Treatment

Each month, the number of telephone calls from parents of secondary school kids in question to TMJ is increasing. You want to come here and see us, if the joint symptoms are increasing and it is linked to your bite. How does orthodontics and temporomandibular disorders relate really to each other? Ask a TMJ dentist near you without delay.

Thousands of research studies examine the association between braces and TMJ

After a lawsuit against an Oklahoman patient for giving her "TMJ" in 1987, the scientific community used many studies and money to see whether or not orthodontic treatment is truly related with the health of temporomandibular joints or TMJ. Of course, for both the doctors and patients, it can be a real fruitful finding and analysis. This study has examined the various types of bad bites and the various treatment approaches to determine whether there are any relationships between cause and effect. Many orthodontics also supported the findings.

Research indicates that orthodontics does not cause or cure TMJ problems.

Scientific studies have time and again found that orthodontics does not cause or cure TMJ disorders. In general, malocclusion is not associated with an extreme pervasiveness of joint problems except with two exceptions. The two exceptions are an after cross bite, which causes the jaw to move to one side after shutting, and a before open bite, where the force of biting is only on the back teeth and the fore teeth are totally untouched. There have not been any problems with under bite, overbite, alignment, crowding. In regard to methods of treatment, these studies failed to identify the association between the use and TMJ problems of headgear, extracts, rubber belt, or oral surgery.

Some problems can contribute to TMJ pain

There are different situations in the TMJ which cannot be associated with the teeth. Some of them are serious, such as cancer and arthritis. Others have to do with working habits (like clenching and grinding). Cross and open bites can be connected to joint difficulties, but TMJ pain is not caused by all bad bites. Many patients have "bad bites" orthodontics and very little TMJ pain reported. Many patients report serious TMJ pain, on the other hand, often have ideal bites. This simple thought can support the evidence in which orthodontics and TMJ are divided. When all the bad bites have TMJ symptoms and every major bite never has pain, it would be defensible to have a direct relationship.
