According to research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is an epidemic of patients suffering from insufficient sleep. Since sleep is an irreplaceable component of a healthy life, this is of great concern. Some estimate that 80% of the 22 million sleep-deprived patients will never be diagnosed or treated. The most common of the sleep disorders is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This disorder hinders the proper flow of oxygen throughout the patient’s body during his sleep.

Dr. Dempsey is an expert in this field and would be delighted to help you find a solution for your sleep apnea. If you happen to be one of the millions of sleep apnea sufferers, the staff at Comprehensive Family Dentistry at Wexford Gardens can develop a treatment plan to resolve this issue for you.

  • You may suffer from a lack of sleep known as insomnia. This is the most common sleep disorder and is often shrugged off as a “bad night of sleep.” Serious consequences can result if this disorder is not addressed.
  • You may suffer from disturbed sleep known as obstructive sleep apnea. With this disorder, patients may stop breathing hundreds of times per night. Some of these interruptions last up to one minute and severely limit the flow of oxygen to the blood and brain.
  • You may suffer from excessive sleepiness known as narcolepsy. This can simply be the result of a lack of sufficient sleep and it can seriously hinder your productivity and alertness throughout your day.

Here are a few examples of how sleep deprivation can have serious consequences during your day as researched in patients 20 years old and older:

  • 23% of sleep-deprived adults struggle with concentration.
  • 18% of sleep-deprived adults struggle with their memory.
  • 11% of sleep-deprived adults struggle while driving their cars.
  • Do others comment that you consistently appear overly tired?
  • Do you consistently feel irritable throughout your day for no apparent reason?
  • Do you constantly struggle with daydreaming or staying awake while you are driving?
  • Do you consistently feel the need to take a nap during the day?
  • Do you constantly struggle with staying focused on the task at hand?
  • Do you constantly struggle with emotional outbursts and moodiness?
  • Do you constantly struggle to stay awake while watching TV each evening?
  • Do you constantly struggle to stay awake during the day unless you have a caffeinated drink?
  • Avoid highly caffeinated drinks or foods high in refined sugars after 7:00 p.m. each evening.
  • Use your bed only for sleep and relaxation.
  • Avoid the impulse to take a nap during the day if you missed sleep the night before.
  • Avoid eating, reading, or TV while lying in bed.
  • Discipline your mind to avoid worrying about problems once you have gone to bed.
  • Avoid physical exercise or activity once you are within three hours of bedtime.
  • Be disciplined about going to bed and waking up at a consistent time.
  • Avoid “sleeping in” on weekends and holidays.
  • Create a comfortable sleeping environment with a dark, quiet room.
